Yoshitomo Nara Opens His "Ceramic Works and…” Exhibit in Hong Kong

Including a new painting series and various sculpture designs.

Although Art Basel Hong Kong 2018 stole much of the art world’s attention this past weekend, another show also hitting the bustling Asian metropolis commenced this past week grabbing its own fair share of the spotlight. Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara took his “Ceramic Works and…” showcase to Pace Gallery, which includes new ceramic sculptures and painting projects.

The artist’s famed childlike characters take a contemporary twist, with 12 new sculptures making their debut. A new series of paintings also comes to the forefront, which has been described as using a “thinner quality of acrylic paint compared to oil, Nara creates each painting by adding and removing pigment until he reaches his desired effect: a canvas made up of suspended hues that allows the figure to emerge through layers of color, inviting the viewer to stand still and enter a moment of contemplation.” For those interested in checking out the new exhibit, “Ceramic Works and…” is showing now at Pace Gallery until May 12.
