Jose Parla Breaks Down 'Amistad America' for 'Landmarks'

“Painting on walls, writing on walls — as a form of communication.”

For the latest edition of Landmarks, talented Brooklyn artist Jose Parla sits down with the outlet behind the effort to talk about the creative processes that bring his artwork to life. A renowned muralist, Jose Parla laid the foundations for his current success back in the hip-hop scene of ’90s New York City, designing album covers and merchandise lines for popular rappers.
For Jose Parla’s Landmarks showcase “The work that I became interested in since I was very young was always proto-linguistic,” Parla explains. “Painting on walls, writing on walls — as a form of communication. The significance of all the traces left behind that make up the history of a place. The layers of paint on a wall. The layers of human history and migration. What led a place to become what it is.” The painting spotlighted here, Jose Parla’s Amistad America, was created using that mindset.
