Daniel Arsham Shows off New Work in Exclusive Studio Tour

The artist talks his creative process before hitting POW! WOW! Hawaii.

HYPEBEAST TV

Daniel Arsham takes us inside his studio for the latest entry in HYPEBEAST Diaries. We find the New York-based artist in the midst of preparations for his discussion at Hawaii’s Lana Lane Studios for POW! WOW! 2018.

Arsham walks us through his studio, explaining the unusual set-up — “I always have the entrance of the studio come directly through the shop… The first introduction of the space being this chaotic… work environment” — as he discusses some of his upcoming pieces, which include a deconstructed DeLorean and sculpture made from calcite crystal. He discusses the studio’s schedule and shows off some of his personal collection, which includes Nike sneakers, KAWS figures and Leica cameras.

Later, he takes his son to an art gallery, “I’m not trying to get him to be an artist… it’s more just to introduce him to this world… Art in general is a way to cause people to think outside of the every day, and question things… That’s where I hope he gets these things from.” As we head to Hawaii and touch on Arsham’s then-upcoming appearance at POW! WOW!, the artist is reflective: “I always feel like there’s maybe other things that I want to explore, and nothing ever feels completely resolved or settled… That drive is sort of what brings me to the next project.”

Recently, we discussed gentrification and POW! WOW!’s role in Hawaii’s street art community.
