Daniel Arsham Reimagines Ancient Chinese Lantern for New Sculpture
Featuring his signature color chiaroscuro style.

Daniel Arsham teamed up with Chinese television program National Treasure to reinterpret an ancient Chinese artifact called the Changxin Palace Lantern in his signature cast sculpture aesthetic. The reimagined artwork was cast pure white and then painted with a dusting of pigment at a certain angle to introduce a color chiaroscuro.
“The Changxin Palace Lantern is an elegant gilt bronze lantern used to light the baths in the palace of Empress Dou,” said the TV show that is known for spotlighting China’s most precious historical relics. “Dating back to the Han Dynasty (206BC-220AD), it was excavated in 1968 from the tomb of Liu Sheng, the Zhongshan King, and is currently preserved in the Hebei Museum in China.”
Accompanying the sculpture is a collaborative T-shirt that features a graphic of Arsham’s version of the lantern. The tee and editions of the sculpture are set to release in 2019. Take a look at the photos above and then head over to Daniel Arsham’s website to learn more.
