Artist Sho Shibuya Elevates Japanese Weekly Letterforms

As part of a solo exhibition at NYC’s +81 Gallery.

Japanese artist Sho Shibuya is the subject of a new solo exhibition at +81 Gallery in New York City’s SoHo district. Entitled “WEEK,” the show spotlights diverse takes on Japanese weekly letterforms or “Katakana.” These works, appearing minimalist and dynamic, were meticulously crafted using various techniques such as painting to paper-cutting. “Inspired by daily moments and create a series of artwork though simple typography, experimenting with different materials, he found peace through this exercise and creating ‘Katakana’ became his weekly ritual,” expressed the gallery.

View select works in the slideshow above. “WEEK” is on view until October 13, head over to +81 Gallery’s website to learn more. Elsewhere in art, get an exclusive first look at Yayoi Kusama’s forthcoming exhibition at London’s Victoria Miro gallery.
