Google & Award-Winning Artist Break Down 'How to Fix a Toilet and Other Things We Couldn't Do Without Search'

A visual essay on global search engine trends.

As Google‘s own research has discovered, “how to…” posts have increased by more than 140% since 2004. In the past 13 years, the denizens of the world wide web have headed over to Google to learn how to master all sorts of home improvement skills, utilizing the “how to” search to pick up some amateur handyman skills. Recognizing these trends, the Google Trends team linked up with acclaimed designer Xaquin Gonzalez Veira — an award winner who has worked with The New York Times, National Geographic and other major, respected outlets — to produce a creative visual that gathers together all those important things you just couldn’t accomplish without the all-powerful “Search” function.

Known as How To Fix a Toilet And Other Things We Couldn’t Do Without Search, Google Trends and Veira’s visual essay and virtual guide gathers together data visualizations, interesting patterns, the most popular “how to…” items searched and more, to provide individuals with a unique, accessible breakdown of how people use the internet to learn more about the world around them. Included in How To Fix a Toilet And Other Things We Couldn’t Do Without Search are explorations of health and wellness searches, peoples’ questions concerning love and relationships, digital culinary knowledge quests, the technical process behind the creation of slime, some of the internet’s most difficult queries and more.
