Daan Roosegaarde's 'Waterlicht' Installation Illuminates Impact of Rising Sea Levels

Immerse yourself in a virtual body of water.

Dutch artist Daan Roosegaarde will once again launch his most-popular Waterlicht installation as part of the Abandon Normal Devices Festival in England. The stunning presentation will completely immerse visitors into a virtual body of water made using LED technology and accompanying software.

The monumental showcase is more than just visual eye-candy, rather, Roosegaarde aims to bring awareness to climate change. Especially, since “The Netherlands is below sea level, so without technology and without creative thinking we would all drown, we would all die, but somehow we didn’t move to Germany and we stayed,” the artist slightly quipped to Wired. As for the digital installation itself, he expressed, “We use high-focused LED and program it at different movements and curves, but actually the wind does the real magic. It’s continuously changing and it means there’s a measure of unexpectedness in the piece that we can only partly control.”

Watch the stunning video above and catch Waterlicht at Abandoned Normal Devices Festival this September 23.
