Sneakerwolf's Kanji-Graphy Exhibition Channels Edo Period Aesthetics With a Rebellious Flair

We first learned of Sneakerwolf‘s “Kanji-Graphy” stylings in one our Studio Visit series late last year. While his footwear label LOSERS already gained traction within the fashion realm, his other artistic persona remained much more under the wraps, unless you were a close follower of his collaborative works where hints of it could be seen. After sharing his early design inspirations and memorable projects, Sneakerwolf finished off our conversation by hinting he would finally unveil his canvas works to the public sometime this year. Luckily for us, he kept his word.

Currently showing at the PORTER Gallery in Omotesando is the Saimtama-native’s exhibition “A.” Deriving from this fusion of Ukiyo-e and his personal love for all-things skateboarding, street culture and graffiti is a powerful set of canvas works and prints that allude to the notions of “Against,” “Alternative,” and “Attitude.” More familiar motifs can be found as well, such as smiley faces, stars, crossbones and even a subtle inclusion of the middle finger smartly re-packaged as an imaginary Kanji. If you happen to be in Tokyo make sure to check out the show which, is set to run until June 18 at the address below, before making its way to another location in Sendai the following week.
