MoMA PS1 Has Installed a Glowing Canopy Made of Robotically Knitted Textile

Blue, pink, and purple hues illuminate during nighttime.

MoMA PS1 has enlisted New York-based Jenny Sabin Studio to create a sprawling canopy that sprays mist throughout the day and glows once the sun sets. Titled Lumen, the captivating installation is made of recycled photo-luminescent material that absorbs solar energy to exude blue, pink, and purple lights. Visitors are encouraged to touch the canopy’s 250 fabric tubes that were robotically knitted out of the woven fiber. Alongside the installation are several private seating areas with recycled wooden spool stools for folks to rest, relax and take in the striking web-like structure.

“With innovative construction and design processes borne from a critical merging of technology and nature to precise attention to detail at every scale, Lumen will no doubt engage visitors from day to night in a series of graduated environments and experiences,” said MoMA associate curator Sean Anderson to Dezeen.

Lumen is set to launch at MoMA PS1 on June 29. Peruse the gallery above and visit Jenny Sabin Studio’s official website to view more projects.
