A First Look at Galerie Perrotin's Massive Lower East Side Space

The opening kicks off with Iván Argote’s “La Venganza Del Amor.”

Following expansions in Seoul and Tokyo, art dealer Emanuel Perrotin has unveiled his newest location in NYC’s Lower East Side, which is perhaps his most ambitious and biggest project yet. After closing the Upper East location last year, Galerie Perrotin’s team has been trying to avert the typical gallery space, locating to downtown’s more dynamic art scene. While the five-story space is still under construction, the first floor of the building opened on Thursday with Colombian artist Iván Argote’s “La Venganza Del Amor” as its first exhibition. At 33, Argote is one of Perrotin’s youngest artists, but has been with the company since 2009. His pieces range from sculptures to hanging installations to videos, focused on a global political themes.

When complete in November, the 25,000-square-foot space will rival the Gagosian Gallery in Chelsea, making it one of the largest galleries in New York. Formerly home to a design and fabrics company, the Beckenstein Building was purchased for $28 million USD in 2015. Designed by Peterson Rich Office, three floors will include exhibition space, while the rooftop will be open to outdoor sculptures and the ground floor will host a bookstore. Get a glimpse at Galerie Perrotin’s latest space above and visit Argote’s exhibition on view now until June 11.
