James Turrell has Built an Observatory in the Roden Crater

The pioneering light and space artist wants you to see the stars differently.

Though still in progress, light artist James Turrell has been working with astronomers on building an observatory in the extinct volcano that is now the Roden Crater in Arizona. When complete, the structure will not only bring art and nature together, but also revive the ancient traditions of star gazing. Different events throughout the year — solstices and meteor showers — will be open to be experienced in new ways as chambers and tunnels have been designed with carefully calculated alignments and apertures.
