New York's Magazzino Museum Is a Minimalist Tribute to Italian Art

Embracing the space’s industrial roots.

Led by Spanish architect Miguel Quismondo, a project to convert a farmer’s warehouse in New York into a museum showcasing the best of contemporary Italian art has now been completed. Situated in Cold Spring, NY, the 18,000 square feet of Magazzino Art Museum specializes in art from the post-war era, comprising largely of pieces from the collection of art collectors Nancy Olnick and Giorgio Spanu.

Paying homage to the building’s roots — even the name, “Magazzino,” itself means warehouse in Italian — the space makes use of industrial materials, such as concrete, in both its interior and exterior design, creating a versatile and aesthetically satisfying space for displaying the museum’s works.

Magazzino Art Museum is open now, located at the below address, and currently plays host to the exhibition “Margherita Stein: Rebel With a Cause.” In other art news, check out this preview of the upcoming Haroshi exhibition at Daniel Arsham and Ronnie Fieg‘s new gallery space.
