Cai Guo-Qiang's New Exhibition Offers Explosive Artwork at the Prado Museum

“The Spirit of Painting” features new gunpowder-painted artwork.

Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang‘s latest exhibition is now underway at Madrid’s Prado Museum. Entitled “The Spirit of Painting,” the event is the Chinese artist’s first dedicated painting showing in 30 years.

Known for his gunpowder paintings and their concurrent ignitions, Guo-Qiang is only the second living artist to engage in a solo show at the Prado. His exhibition prelude began with the unveiling of The Spirit of Painting, a new piece taking its name from the event. Measuring nearly 60 feet in length, the painting is one of the artist’s largest canvases. Prior to the show’s opening, Guo-Qiang took residence in the museum’s Hall of Realms, producing eight brand new works utilizing gunpowder locally sourced from Valencia.

The 30-painting exhibit will show through March 4, 2018. For more on the provocative artist, take a look at his Frank Gehry-designed home.
