Two Stolen Van Gogh Paintings Recovered in Italy

The works had been missing for 14 years.

Two Vincent Van Gogh art works that had been missing since 2002 have been recovered. The paintings were found in Italy as part of an ongoing investigation into organized crime.

Seascape at Scheveningen and Congregation Leaving the Reformed Church in Nuenen were made in 1882 and 1884/5 respectively. The works were stolen in 2002 when burglars scaled the Amsterdam museum on a December morning, broke through a window, and escaped from the side of the building using a rope to get back down.

Axel Rüger, director of the Van Gogh Museum, said “The paintings have been found! That I would be able to ever pronounce these words is something I had no longer dared to hope for.”

In other recent Van Gogh-related news, Rijksmuseum teamed up with Google to release 250,000 artworks from Van Gogh and others for free download.
