Yayoi Kusama's Signature Polka Dots Decorate Philip Johnson's 'Glass House'

The Japanese artist transforms the modernist estate into one of her signature infinity rooms.

Famed Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama is taking over Philip Johnson’s Glass House for the third time, transforming the modernist estate into one of her signature infinity rooms for “Dots Obsession – Alive, Seeking for Eternal Hope.” Not only does the installation see Glass House covered in 1,200 low-tack adhesive red vinyl spots in a trio of sizes, but it includes two other works, too: Narcissus Garden, which fills the the garden’s pond with 1,300 mirrored spheres and her polka dot-covered squash sculpture, Pumpkin. Kusama herself even penned a little poem in celebration of the opening:

The dotted glass house brings eternal love and hope. Before the Glass House, those who see it promise their eternal prayers for peace and love. Glass House, our everything. With feelings of life and death, the house that I love encourages life. Glass House forever.

“Dots Obsession – Alive, Seeking for Eternal Hope” is open through September 26.
