50 Years in the Making, Christo and Jeanne Claude's Floating Piers Is Already Gone

“Like walking on the back of a whale.”

Over the weekend, the last wave of visitors got to experience Christo and Jeanne Claude’s bright 100,000-square-foot floating walkway. The art installation, which is set between Venice and Milan in Italy’s Lake Iseo was the final choice, as Tokyo Bay and Río de la Plata were also up for consideration. It took the artist and a team of engineers and researches nearly 50 years to properly plan the project, however after deciding on a location, actual construction only took about 22 months. The piece was short-lived unfortunately, as the artist intended it to be as transient as the experience itself. Christo explained, “The work needs to be gone, because I do not own the work, no one does.” Check out the video above for an impression of the dock, and surrounding mountainside.
