Contemporary African Art Gets a Boost at 1:54 Fair in New York

The event returns to Brooklyn for its second edition.

The 1:54 Contemporary African Art Fair returns to New York — Red Hook, Brooklyn, to be precise — following its inaugural event in the city last year. The fair initially launched in London, helmed by Moroccan-born Touria El Glaoui, and will see its fourth year at the Somerset House in October. This year’s event in New York will be held at artist Dustin Yellin’s Pioneer Works space, setting itself away from the current Frieze Week frenzy on Randall’s Island. A reference to the 54 countries on the continent, 1:54 aims to showcase the diversity of African art and culture on an international scale. Partnering with 17 exhibitors to highlight the works of over 60 African and African diasporan artists, the program will also feature educational programs, film screenings, lectures and more. Head over to the organization’s website for more information and if you’re in the area, be sure to stop by.
