'2001: A GIF Odyssey' Is Kubrick's Entire Classic in 569 GIF Images
Testing the limits of the fair use doctrine.
Digital producer and copywriter Jean-Baptiste Henri Franck Cyrille Marie Le Divelec (or simply JB) has done us all a favor by taking the time to chop up Stanley Kubrick’s seminal sci-fi epic, 2001: A Space Odyssey, into a whopping series of 569 GIFs. JB undertook the remarkably strenuous project as a way of testing the limits of copyright infringement as defined by “Fair Use” doctrine, which JB explained in a Rick-Rolling trailer (above).
The limitations of the format mean that JB’s version of 2001 is mute, but the artist has revealed he might eventually host the entire GIF version on a standalone website complete with the film’s score — which is public domain. In the meantime, you can ‘watch’ the work and mine for reaction images on GIPHY.
