POW! WOW! Hawaii 2016's Most Immersive Murals

Works from Audrey Kawasaki, Risk MSK, Tristan Eaton, and more.

After touring Asia with dates in Taipei and Tokyo, contemporary art initiative POW! WOW! takes to its hometown Oahu, Hawaii for its 2016 festivities. Taking place over the course of Chinese New Year and the weekend of Valentine’s Day in the city’s Kakaʻako area, it goes without saying that an air of ingenuity was present, as both local and international artists brought stark, plain walls and panels to life with bold renderings. Painting feverously under the beating sun, iconic graffiti artists such as OG Slick, Sket One and Risk MSK were in attendance, painting alongside new wave acts like 1010, Pantone who use formative lines and harsh shadows to create optical illusions. Representing Detroit were the 1xRUN print crew and animated muralists Patch Whiskey and Ghostbeard. Audrey Kawasaki painted her first ever large-scale outdoor mural, Brazilian illustrator-turned-muralists Bicicleta Sem Freio shared their piece of mind over a regional-inspired piece, while the NTL Crew — formed at the last POW! WOW! and consist of artists such as Hueman, Lauren YS, Tatiana Suarez, Woes, Kamea Hadar, Jose Mertz — captivated passerby with boisterous characters. Leading with Kevin Lyons’s trademark caricatures, check out a recap of the most immersive murals at this year’s POW! WOW! 2016 and head to its Instagram for a more detailed look at what went down.
