Ai Weiwei Mural Reinterpreted by Artist Hebru Brantley for Miami Art Week

With Art Basel ushering in some of the world’s best exhibitions and collections, artworks have taken over the city of Miami, from the inside of exclusive galleries to the walls that line the streets of the seaport city. In street art news, Chicago-based artist Hebru Brantley contributed to an already existing mural portrait of the outspoken Chinese contemporary artist Ai Weiwei in Miami’s Wynwood district. The mega-sized monochromatic portrait, signed off by an “unknown artist” which was later discovered to be Nimai Kesten, was masked over by Brantley’s trademark steampunk goggles in yellow spray-paint, a motif that speaks to the artist’s “pop infused contemporary art inspired by Japanese anime and the bold aesthetics of street art pioneers Jean Michel Basquiat, Kaws and Keith Haring.” located at 2450 NY 2nd Ave., the re-interpreted artwork is positioned on the exterior wall of an art space in which Brantley is showing a solo exhibition titled ‘Theories from the Low End’ which is on show from now until January 7.
