Cai Guo-Qiang Lights a 500-Meter Firework Ladder Towards the Heavens
“Sky Ladder” is dedicated to the artist’s 100-year old grandmother.

It had always been a childhood dream of artist Cai Guo-Qiang‘s to see a display of this magnitude take place. “Sky Ladder,” an art exhibition consisting of a 500-meter long fireworks system attached to a white balloon with 6,200 cubic meters of helium, lit up the sky in the small fishing village of Huiyu Island Harbour in Quanzhou, China. Cai dedicated the display to his grandmother, and claims “is tender, and touches my heart deeply: it carries affection for my hometown, my relatives and my friends.” Cai further remarks that the ladder carries hope as it rises toward the morning sun, rather than his precious attempts which took place at dusk. “For me, this not only means a return but also the start of a new journey.”
