Jean-Michel Basquiat "Now’s the Time" @ Guggenheim Bilbao

The first thematic retrospective of the New York legend’s work.

Guggenheim Bilbao is celebrating the work of legendary street artist Jean-Michel Basquiat with a retrospective entitled “Now’s the Time.” Basquait, whose distinctive and provocative style earned him recognition from fine artists and graffiti stalwarts alike before his death from a heroin overdose in 1988, was a prolific figure in the New York art scene throughout the 1980s. Leaving behind a vast array of eclectic and engaging work that would go on to be considered some of the finest of the era, Basquiat’s referential, pop culture-influenced style would see him recognized as the definitive New York artist. This collection of 100 drawings and paintings is set to be the first thematic retrospective of the artist’s work and goes some way to showing the impact that Basquiat had within his short lifetime. “Jean-Michel Basquiat: Now’s the Time” runs from July 3–November 1 at the Guggenheim Bilbao.
