A painting by Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh fetched $66.3 million at auction on Tuesday. The Allee of Alyscamps was part of the offerings at Sotheby’s impressionist and modern art sale, and was sold to an Asian private collector for well over its presale estimate of around $40 million. The current auction record for a van Gogh is $82.5 million, but this recent sale is the highest price paid for the artist’s work since 1998. The sale also offered works from Claude Monet, as well as works from two prominent single-owner collections including pieces from Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Fernand Leger, Joan Miro and more.
