The work of Todd James — also known by his pseudonym REAS — is characterized by vibrant colors that fill up his obscure, cartoon-style paintings. Straddling the line between graffiti and modern art, the New York-based artists continues to provoke viewers with grotesque social and political messages presented in whimsical strokes. His latest showing, “Fantasy Island” at London’s Lazarides Gallery draws inspiration from the disorder occurring in Somali and other countries at war. Caricatures of armed soldiers and scantily-clad women are intertwined with AK-47 assault rifles, teacups and armchairs, presenting a perplexing repertoire nothing short of compelling. “Fantasy Island” runs until May 28, head to Lazarides for more information.
