Following an auction earlier this month, we saw Picasso’s Les Femmes d’Alger cubist masterpiece, also know as Version O to help differentiate it from 14 other pieces bearing the same name, sell for a record breaking $180 million USD. Auction house Christie’s is said to have taken roughly $19.35 million USD in commission, ranking this painting as one of the most expensive to ever be sold at auction. According to the art world sources of Page Six, the painting could be on its way to Qatar and is rumored to have been bought by billionaire and former Qatari Prime Minister Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani. During the May 11 auction, Version O was sold to an anonymous buyer represented by Christie’s international head of contemporary art, Brett Gorvy. Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani served as chief executive to Qatar’s Investment Authority, which to this day stands as one of the world’s richest sovereign wealth funds and owns establishments such as Harrods and has stakes in the London Stock Exchange.
