Having lived out most of his film career in the United Kingdom, it’s sometimes overlooked that Stanley Kubrick was born in The Bronx, and that he started out behind the lens as a photographer. Recently pulled from the Look Magazine archives, we get a rare look at one of Kubrick’s early photo-editorial works for the magazine — a stint lasting from 1945-1950 — in which he documents New York City’s fine subway system. Shot when he was only 18 years old, in the photographs we see passengers armed with newspapers during their daily commute, an early Canal Street exit, a couple on a date, and a few shots of passengers getting a little too comfortable.
