In light of his recent exhibition at New York’s Gagosian Gallery in the Meatpacking District, prolific Japanese artist Takashi Murakami took the time to grace NOWNESS with a rare interview. In the conversation, Murakami details his creative inspirations for the show – which range in topic from Japan’s ecological degeneration through history to deeply profound personal criticism. The artist goes on to explain the process in creating some strikingly grotesque sculptures, which include a kind of self-mocking portrait.
