Last year, 16,000 dead pigs floated down a river in Shanghai which triggered questions on China’s environmental conditions. The news disgusted most and also served as inspiration to Cai Guo-Qiang, who recently launched a solo show called “The Ninth Wave” at Shanghai’s contemporary art museum, the Power Station of Art. The show consists of grand installations that are both compelling and disturbing. Signature works include a full-size fishing boat with faux animals — think tigers, pandas, leopards and elephants — looking sick and distressed. The installation was inspired by a 19th century Russian painting also named The Ninth Wave, where survivors of a shipwreck hung on to the boat waiting to be rescued. Guo-Qiang replaced the survivors with disheartened animals, making satirical remark on the pollution crisis. Shot by Benoit Florencon, enjoy recap photos of the exhibition above and be sure to check out the exhibition if you’re in Shanghai.
