After making its public debut earlier this month, one of Jeff Koons‘ trio of Popeye sculptures is set to debut at auction in New York this May. Part of Sotheby’s New York Evening Auction of Contemporary Art, the work – originally created by the celebrated artist back in 2009 – sees the spinach-downing, pipe-smoking, tattoo-sporting sailor immortalized in stainless steel, standing 7’ tall and finished in a bold metallic glaze. A fitting nod to the iconic character, Koons’ statue is expected to fetch as much as $25 million USD.
