A reminiscent of Basquiat’s compositions and those who fused New York’s diverse subcultures with the neo-expressionism movement of the ’80s, Julian Schnabel has built a reputation for his brash and endearing stance in the art world. While the crossover to film and directing has earned him Academy Award-winning accolades, the Brooklyn-based artist’s “plate paintings” remains one of his most sought-after works. In this short documentary directed by Porfirio Munoz titled In The Course of Seven Days, we catch the controversial artist speak on emotions and the compositional energy seen in his paintings; he also lets us in to his home studio as we get a closer look at his techniques in painting on found objects. Schnabel is currently exhibiting ”View of Dawn in the Tropics: Paintings, 1989-1990” at the Gagosian Gallery, New York — a repertoire which consists of paintings from the past 10 years.
