The Once Homeless Artist Takes His Art From Sidewalk to Gallery

Anyone who lives, works or commutes via Shoreditch High Street, East London would be familiar with John Dolan. His name may not immediately ring bells outside of the area, but his position by the busy sidewalk with his loyal accomplice George the dog has ingrained into the backdrop of the now highly fashionable, gentrified area of Shoreditch. For the last three years, John has sat quietly documenting the surrounding architectures and deduct buildings via sketches and illustrations. To a certain extent, John’s artistic abilities mirrors his subjects, representing the old, decayed Shoreditch where talent and aspiration await beneath the grittiness. A street artist in the most traditional form, John’s unique portrayal of the streets has allowed him to collaborate with some of graffiti’s most prolific, with the likes of ROA, Zomby, CEPT, Thierry Noir all contributing to his sketches. Now, the once homeless artist will exhibit his work at Howard Griffin Gallery, just minutes walk from the concrete floor he use to occupy. Titled “George the Dog, John the Artist,” the exhibition will take place between September 19 – 26.
