To some, 2013 feels very much like the mid-eighties – a transitional period that sees the transference of artistic power between generations occurring. Ricky Powell‘s work is chiefly concerned with portraying this idea: the rise of young artists shaping the general aesthetic for not only their, but future generations. Powell achieves this from behind a lens, having famously documented the Beastie Boys, Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat over the course of their respective careers. Accordingly, he is one of the most celebrated modern photographers of his generation, not only for his keen sense of portraiture, but also for his cultural sixth sense. Powell is the subject of a new exhibition at David Kesting Presents in Brooklyn, New York. If in the area, be sure to catch a rare selection of photographs curated by Tono Radvany, showing through June 9.
