Yohji Yamamoto is revered as one of the pioneers that brought Japan’s dark, avant-garde styling to the West and rightfully so. However, it always seemed as if the same realm that brought him critical acclaim and commercial success also capped his imagination for fears of lost appeal and, more importantly to his investors, revenue. This is maybe why we’ve seen the almost 60-year-old designer expand the scope of his vision to mediums like literature, music, film and even art in its rawest form over the past two decades. Taking time away from his resurrected fashion career for the moment, Yamamoto plans to exhibit his newest art installation “5 CUTS | A VISUAL DIALOGUE” at Berlin’s MADE later this month. The video series attempts to liberate Yohji from the ever-present fashion spotlight to put his creative vision on display. Open from April 28 to May 5, be sure to check back for a recap of the show.
