Having recently seen Aakash Nihalani‘s three-dimensional street art take shape in Long Island, the New York-based creative brings his unique style to Brooklyn’s Signal for an exhibit that has been dubbed “ISLANDS.” Utilizing some heavy-duty masking tape and brightly-colored paint, Nihalani is renowned for incorporating rudimentary geometric shapes on a flattened visual plane with techniques in contrast and forced perspective to convey depth or motion. For “ISLANDS” the young artist forgoes his traditionally vibrant color scheme to create a series of site-specific works in high-contrast, monochromatic black and white. The effects are illusory, activated only from certain points in the room, and appearing distorted or distended from others, thus putting the viewer in the footprints of the artist to gain perspective of how each piece originated. “ISLANDS” will begin showing at Brooklyn’s Signal this Friday, April 26.
