In 2011, NASA chose the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space (CASIS) to manage the International Space Station’s U.S. National Laboratory. Its mission is to harness the imagination of both American entrepreneurs and scientists alike to aid in accelerating and facilitating space-based research as well as generating public awareness of the National Lab’s research that in turn makes space science more accessible to the world. With ARK1 – the first CASIS-sponsored ISS launch – scheduled for September of this year, the nonprofit agency enlists the often-controversial street artist Shepard Fairey to create a patch that’ll be worn by each astronaut making the fall travel to outer space. Certainly outside his typical realm of design, the above interview features Fairey discussing the inspiration and meaning behind his next-gen patch. So will Fairey’s collaboration reignite our younger generation’s curiosity for the unknowns of space? Will CASIS team with an athletic shoemaker to create a new age space boot? Although the possibilities are endless because of this new initiative with CASIS, it is safe to say NASA succeeded in grabbing our attention once again.
