“Design as a term is thrown about so casually,” says Tom Dixon, “but in the end all designers have one common goal, which is trying to improve the way we live.” Never far from interesting conversations with some of our culture’s most influential, NOWNESS sits down with the self-taught industrial designer, who shares with us the first time he picked up a welder, and his thoughts on the meaning behind design today. The British designer started his tenure via experiments with scrap metal that he found as a student, before taking his work to London’s Victoria and Albert Museum, where his renowned S-Chair became a part of the permanent collection in 1992, followed by a placement at New York’s MoMA. Accompanied by his puppy dog and a welding torch, the one-time disco-punk aficionado offers a taste of his quirky personality in the short above.
