Filmmaker Matt Black’s latest in-depth documentary portrait comes on assignment for NOWNESS and focuses on the worldwide acclaim artist JR has received for his global photo project. Having grown up in the suburbs of Paris, JR first began his foray into the art world as a teen – tagging and “exhibiting” all around La Ville-Lumière. Segueing to works that have earned him a TED prize, the massive, iconic images can be found hand-pasted to crumbling buildings, trains, garbage trucks and bridges – “whimsically reclaiming the urban landscape.” Today JR, who views the city as “the biggest gallery in the world,” also shows in more traditional spaces including Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin and the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the Los Angeles MOCA.
