One part hoarder, one part artist, Vince Hannemann has been collecting junk since he was about 16 years old to create the appropriately-named Austin, Texas installation, the “Cathedral of Junk.” Continuously constructed since 1988, actions in 2010 by the city of Austin saw the demolition of roughly half the structure, amounting to a disappearance of more than 60 tons of materials. However, after receiving the go-ahead from an engineer and a building permit, Hannemann was joined by hundreds of volunteers as they took to rebuilding the original work. Here, director Evan Burns takes a look inside the cathedral as “The Junk King” sheds some light on the unique work and its ability to transport visitors to another place entirely.
