A celebration of abstraction post-Warhol, The Painting Factory recalls the original studio that spawned the movement–Andy Warhol’s Factory in the ’60s. The exhibition traces the influence of Warhol as an abstractionist on painters like Christopher Wool, Rudolf Stingel, and the numerous new generation artists who have since sprung in the last two decades. Many of these later artists have tapped on Warhol’s established mechanical and silkscreen printing techniques, successfully revitalizing the New York School tradition of abstractionism by updating it with more recent elements of pop, minimal and process art from the last few decades. Paintings from Warhol’s Shadows, Rorschachs, and Camouflage series will be present flanked by the works of Christopher Wool and Rudolf Stingel, further accompanied by newer compositions from Tauba Auerbach, Wade Guyton, Seth Price, Josh Smith, Mark Bradford, Sterling Ruby, Urs Fischer and Julie Mehretu. The exhibition runs from April 29 to August 20 at the MOCA Grand Avenue.
