Barbara Kruger's Iconic Styles Covers Los Angeles Buses for "Arts Matter"

Los Angeles-based artist Barbara Kruger is known for her photomontages and creating environments

Los Angeles-based artist Barbara Kruger is known for her photomontages and creating environments that envelope viewers with powerful text, as well as her bold, thought-provoking captions. As part of Arts Matter — a joint initiative between The LA Fund and LAUSD —  Kruger is creating textual art for 12 city buses, 85 billboards, and a range of media sites. The project is aimed at supporting funding for arts education in Los Angeles school systems, an effort particularly close to the artist’s heart — Kruger, in addition to her personal work, is a professor of art at UCLA. According to her, “The place of the arts in the classroom is essential in encouraging invention, ambition, and an understanding of the importance and pleasures of living an examined life,” a belief that is reflected in her bus work. Keep an eye out for the 12 buses should you find yourself in the LA area.
