New York-born visual artist Samuel Bayer is a man of many talents. He is a director, a cinematographer, and a photographer. He is perhaps best known for directing music videos, one of which was Nirvana’s hazy classic, “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” His latest work, an exhibition called “Transitions,” is a collection of still-life photographs and video installation. He focuses on the butterfly, depicting it in different stages of its life. The “transition” from a caterpillar to a butterfly can be violent, painful and ultimately, fail. But Bayer is arguing that there is beauty in this process. The video installation is based on his documentary film, a piece about a young adult named David Anguiano who was severely injured as child. Despite his injuries, his subject has maintained a remarkably positive attitude. At only 20 years old, he has directed actors like Eva Mendes, James Franco, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, and Kristen Dunst in his annual Christmas play for hospitalized children, to much acclaim. The exhibition premiers this Thursday, September 22 and will benefit The Art of Elysium (6 p.m. to 9 p.m.).
